The Historical-Ethnographic Parade was first held in Serpa in 1979, organized by the Fairs Organisation Committee of the time, and was meant to represent local scenes, depicting the history, the ethnography and the built heritage.
Currently organized by the local municipality, the preparations begin about two months in advance, the time necessary for the construction and painting of the floats, the construction of new scenes, the preparation of costumes and the loaning of vehicles by private individuals.
It involves some 700 participants, from those taking part in the parade to drivers and construction teams; it is an important part of the Serpa cultural life that attracts visitors and is the pride of those who organise it.
In 2019 the Serpa Historical Parade celebrates its 40th anniversary and will be held on April 21st.
